Anders Denken

THIS MUST BE THE PLACE.

Beeple may not agree, but we think the material reality of a work of art is something wonderful. We want to be able to share with it a physical space, in which the scale is set by you. The past year has only reinforced this realization. We love making art, alone and together. Now we can present an exhibition again and want to celebrate the place of making. Here is where thoughts and imaginations become image. Welcome to our studio. THIS MUST BE THE PLACE.

Entkoppelt. Wo bin ich hier? Himmel da. Boden dort. Alles beim Alten. Augen zu. Bilderfluss. Augen auf.

Sculpture and Space
In Conversation with People

The contributions of the Department Sculpture and Space to the Angewandte Festival 2021 are aimed at the University’s staff and its visitors. They reinforce the connection of artworks with workspaces and can be seen or overlooked. The works were selected or discussed by the students together with the respective staff members. In recent years, artistic critique regarding representation, inclusion, and social justice has shifted from the margins to the centre of museum practice, as shown by the current Post-MoMA Future strike. Three years ago, Andrea Fraser published her book 2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics, a directory-like volume exploring museum ...

DEVIATION–T5/G5_KP

A Dream About The Great Painting Exhibition (Or, Possibly a Nightmare)

The boundaries are blurred and flexible, a randomness barely held together, a tool to make the tragic bearable, a way to worship the shown. Through time and action, experiences of inner and outer worlds are captured, invented, and presented: something to feel.

I find it hard to look at all these works and try to figure out what connects them. My head keeps saying that there must be something, since we all share the same space. And I get irritated. I think…are we in the same place, the same space?

In his thesis, Simeon Jaax constructs an encounter with the things of his childhood. He approaches his objects via memory, to the text, to the photographic image and in this way creates an artistic “object-biography”.

no landscape – no architecture – sculpture

From this formula, the American art historian Rosalind Krauss develops the famous diagramme for a “Sculpture in the Expanded Field”. Hans Schabus takes up this idea of the field by colouring the surfaces of Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz—street, pavements, kerbs, green areas—with white paint. The square in front of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, situated in the middle of the city, is not landscape, not architecture; it is now sculpture. The strict juxtaposition of what is built and what is not, of culture and nature, shapes our understanding of space. In the process, we overlook the specific qualities of ...

606

The work 606 features pillows that inflate with gas and then release it again. With a capacity of 606 litres respectively, they correspond with the daily amount of greenhouse gas that each person in Austria produces through the consumption of beef (according to Statistics Austria). Those who enter the exhibition space are directly confronted with their very amount of daily greenhouse emissions, as demonstrated by the expansion of the pillows. On a more indirect level, visitors also feel how the space is increasingly consumed by the pillows, a reflection of how our habitat is being compromised and endangered by climate change.

The film is focused on different aspects of the creative process, featured in a way that embodies an inner monologue. It aims to relate a period of self-reflection happening after a conversation took place, in order to convey the impact that thoughts and opinions can have. Place of Distinct Voices

Place of distinct voices wonders how to take others’ perspectives to form mental images of how the world looks like through the eyes of others. We make sense of the world around us because of our brain’s interpretation of sensory input. Our reality is built upon the perception that allows us the full-body experience of space. This new civic is a universe on its own, providing an extensive grid of time and space. One experiences it through architecture of inversion and an infinite archive of people’s stories that enhance our empathy and emotions. It is about straightening ...

In the Shard Room

Smashed Japanese Imari, splinters of Chinese blue and white porcelain, shards from historical Meißen and Vienna factories: a room full of smashed porcelain, neatly arranged in piles. The “Shard Room” at Loosdorf Castle in Lower Austria, destroyed after World War II, invites you to reflect on fragility, destruction and reconstruction. The shards attest to the global networks of East Asian porcelain exports since the 17th century and the cultural appropriation and imitation of these luxury objects in Europe. Increased Well-being Through Hiking in Scientific and Non-scientific Knowledge

In order to improve mental well-being, it is important to look at the biological and psychological processes and mechanisms that can promote and influence it. The present bachelor’s thesis explores several of these processes through the example of the recreational activity hiking, as it can promote well-being on several different levels for a wide range of people. Addressing the research question “How does hiking increase well-being?” the theoretical part of this thesis examines different sub-aspects of hiking that can potentially improve well-being. For the applied part a booklet was created containing knowledge from non-scientists and from scientists alike, ...

Invasive Gardening

The access of society to green space, a garden, and horticulture in the urban context is highly unequal. The current health crisis has made the notion of “private green” and its relation to societal privilege and monetary power structures an even more pressing topic. Research on biodiversity in urban areas discusses issues, such as mitigation of climate change, and of the trend of permanently decreasing biodiversity. Allotment gardens can have positive effects on the urban climate, both the protection of species and biodiversity, greening and health. At the same time the so-called middle class discovers allotment gardens to fulfil ...

Head for the mind’s merry-go-round. Drugged-up air traffic controllers point us towards a runway.

The present’s fairground rides hurl us over the abyss. Are we stuck yet? “The experience of the abyss becomes the experience of an elementary disorientation and freedom,” Marcus Steinweg proclaims. “It is the experience of ontological incommensurability, which denounces the incommensurability of everything the subject holds as commensurable—all its certainties, values, evidence, and consistencies.” Will dizziness break apart the inescapable meaning of language? Can the philosophical thinking of unbalance find an equilibrium in language? And further, when we all speak ...

Augmented Reality Technologies become popular because it gives us a chance to perceive the digital environment within the physical one. In this project, physical and virtual environments are designed simultaneously and affect each other. Museum was chosen as a program as a place for exhibiting the art and certain atmosphere for displaying new digital media. The way of interaction of a user and architectural environment is taken as a main navigation point of the design. There are many conspiracy theories and their circulation via online media is becoming faster by the minute. Opposites and aggression often intensify. How can we handle this trend?

As a term project, students used various communication strategies and ideas to explore the possibilities of stimulating a respectful discourse on conspiracy theories and counteracting division in society. The starting point was extensive research into conspiracy theories today and in the past, into psychological and sociological backgrounds and into how the media and society deal with this topic. From there, the students developed campaigns to impartially, respectfully and positively ...

FAZIES (BAND 3 ) coming undone

Starting from a joint engagement with the term archive, students of Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna have developed audio walks: at the heart of these projects lies the universal question about stories that curate history and about the violence with which they are enforced – and the question what could “writing despite everything”, a writing that enters back rooms and the backs of pictures and that reshuffles the cards, look like?

ENDE GELINDE Exhibition of the final theses of Language Arts

The final projects of the Institute of Language Arts are diverse. They include drama, prose and poetry, they experiment, they are more than text to be read, heard and embodied; not one single text that remains among itself. In the context of the Angewandte Festival, language arts leave their building on Salzgries:

Something is in the air. Is it confetti, glittering as it falls to the ground? Texts by the graduates hatching the sky? Is it a hot air balloon with the institute’s new director Gerhild Steinbuch and the new professor Monika Rinck? What they are ...

This thesis investigates, how spatial and sonic qualities of architecture can be used to produce festive interactive instruments of daily communal coping for a marginalized Roma community. Forced to live on a garbage dump in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and facing conditions of environmental racism and institutional neglect, “inhabitable music instrument” produces a system of mechanisms and everyday strategies for a radical, loud communal festivities.

The Otherworldliness, audio-video production creates augmented spatial sceneries for an informal and dynamic production and projection of Nollywood movies in southern Spain. The proposal is a sequence of artefacts, which tense the voids in polyethylene landscape of plastic greenhouses. They create sleek greenscreen studios for movie production, tensegrity Silver Screens for projection and terraces with Silver Gardens which are planted in the traces from the construction process of the structure’s envelope. Tensegrity has dialogue with tensile greenhouses, but the message it brings it’s freedom. Made out of Thermo-Plastic Sediment, an entity between two realms: greenhouses ...

« A C T » aims to rethink the relationship of natural and artificial realms in an « ALL INTERIOR ». As a prototypical investigation into a new residential typology for high-rise buildings, the project deals in and with extreme heat conditions by introducing an architecture of gradients. It seeks to establish a self-defined interior context which enables a new nature to nurture gradually from the inside-out, ultimately resulting in a new cultural identity based on a local climate discourse. The tower promotes a contextual shift away from current dependence, provoking a polyvalent interior-habitat where prevailing exterior conditions are not the predominant context ...

Our city has become quieter. Public life is curtailed. Culture is largely put on halt. The immediacy of our experiences and live encounters are largely missing.

Lumilo

Lumilo is meant to be an aesthetically appealing piece of light source with a never seen fusion of two different technology. It illuminates and builds up an illusion while leaving its perceiver astonished. Its geometrical shapes and graphics create depth and large surfaces of diffusive light. It is simultaneously serving out its two purposes, to dazzle and to deliver enough lumens. It is a mirror when it is turned off and a magician when it is lit up. It blends in but does not hesitate to come alive when it is time to shine. This is Lumilo.

imafuture exploring contemporary fashion communication

This project is an exploration of contemporary fashion branding that asks, how I, as a graphic designer, could expand the toolbox of communication beyond the introduction of new garments and add value through sharing ideas of emerging artists and creatives. My approach is to expand fashion communication in order to build up a visual universe that is rooted in research, reflexivity, and discussion. The main platform of this approach is a website that gives users more than an online shopping experience.

Jeremy Wade: Love Is Not Romance, honey! Lecture Performance by The Battlefield Nurse

Where is love?? In an impossible possible political ritual Jeremy Wade’s 5000-year-old Battlefield Nurse alter ego is sick of how crucial terms such as care, repair and love have been sold down the river in the violent present. We need love to serve as force of interdependence with intimate strangers and all earthly creatures. Sing it!! The Battlefield Nurse will lead a participatory intervention, a fake political ritual repositioning love as a hyper relational ethic.

Urban Redemption

There has long been a vision to find solutions to appease the issues caused by the rapid change of society, modernization and the need for fast and efficient mobility, one was sought after in its materialization in the metabolism movement. The ideals of the movement were to provide clarifications on how to challenge a contemporary society and in doing so finding the instigators of change, to subdue the wild nature of the “new world order”, however, with time these ideas became ironically washed out by the force of the capitalist “order”.

Saans Seekhana A Breathing School for Delhi

The Hindi expression “saans seekhana” can be translated to “breathe to learn”. In Hindu philosophy the breath represents the central life energy and plays a significant role in Indian culture. However, being able to breathe clean air in India is not a commodity but a luxury. The country is facing big challenges when it comes to air pollution. Children are especially vulnerable because their immune defence mechanisms are still developing. A safe and clean environment for children at school is therefor absolutely essential. This new school proposal taps into future learning concepts that call for greater independence among pupils ...

The Rousseau Fan(atic)zine Excerpts from projects created around the annual theme "Du Contrat Social" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau

We have selected Du Contrat Social (On the Social Contract) as our annual theme for the academic year 2020/21. In this key work of the Enlightenment, published in 1762, Jean-Jacques Rousseau explained the development of modern democracy based on the argument that all power must aim for the common good and certainly not for God’s grace.

More than 250 years later, we are taking this work as the starting point for our deliberations. The rules by which we organise our world at present are formulated explicitly in contracts or implicitly in social agreements. Contracts comprise written ...

First Encounters Anticipatory Ecology meets Speculative Design

What happens, if two species that have never interacted before are now going to encounter due to anthropocentrically changed climatic circumstances?

We are currently experiencing a global redistribution of life on earth. The project ‚First Encounters’ tells the stories of species that meet for the very first time, due to climate-change induced range shifts. An ecological momentum of its own has been generated that evolved out of our history of anthropogenic impact on biological processes. The installation visualizes possible consequences that travel through local ecologies to various human-made systems, to manifest as real every-day challenges for us ...

Sound Escapes Nachtwanderungen

Dancing in the Street

The project aims to democratize access both to the limelight and the viewing seat by treating the facades as interfaces between theaters and a wider audience and defining spaces for spectatorship or performance of different scales as an extension of the public realm. Located in Helsinki, Finland, the proposal seeks to extend the calendar of street performances and informal social dance to the cold winter months and transfer the outdoor street like character to the interior by programming the circulation of the building with sequences of plazas, stages and cafes. In the summer, activity reorients to the exterior. The ...

The Russian Diaspora in the Framework of Soft Power

This bachelor’s thesis examines the contemporary Russian diaspora and how it can be conceived in the framework of soft power – the ‘power of attraction’. In the course of this bachelor’s thesis a methodologically plural qualitative analysis of the contemporary Russian diaspora interlinked with Nye’s soft power concept sheds light on how the Russian diaspora can project soft power in the context of its three main pillars – culture, political values, and foreign policy. This further makes it possible to assess concentrations on how and where the Russian diaspora can generate soft power. It is concluded that the ...

Echoes of Now

Raising questions of equality

The Public Program “Are we there yet?” poses questions of equality in relations of inequality and investigates how a good life for all is possible. But what does that actually mean?

Crises and related real urgencies form the background for intersectional cooperations that can imagine the world differently. In collaborative processes, artistic, activist and creative imaginations emerge that share resources, shift relations and move power.

We question current distributions of spatial resources on various levels. What laws, rules, norms and behaviours apply in spaces and how can these be made visible, reflected, decoded, prised open, ...

The work deals with the possibilities of emergent urban strategies, bottom-up systems exploring capacities and the possibilities of multiple and adaptable systems. Topological thinking connects urbanism with architecture. The project develops a forgotten artificial heap in the middle of the city and transforms it into a sustainable, structured cluster of residential, development and technological units. The successive strategy preserves the qualities of the area and develops the hidden potential of the place. The discrete architectures of the units are articulated in a coherent language based on the original factory designs.

inframince infra-mince infra mince An exhibition of the TransArts department

Departing from the idea of reciprocal spatial and temporal pervasion, “inframince infra-mince infra mince“ explores what could distinguish transdisciplinary art today. The subjunctive is used here intentionally. Because this exhibition and publication project does not focus on terminological definitions and categorial boundaries, rather it is oriented upon a notion of artistic research, upon phenomena, practices, and procedures that enable us to traverse the multifaceted field of contemporary artistic production. The exhibition “inframince infra-mince infra mince“ traces the fleeting moments when different elements of artistic, theoretical, scientific, or everyday culture collide. Moments in which art, theory, science, and the everyday ...

Forensically, we’re not at a dead end an alternative solution of occupancy.

Forensically we are not at a dead end is a new form of inhabitation that uses the industrial building and its production to legitimate and reclaim properties for a group of Roma minority who has been facing long- standing ownership issue, by providing spaces for living through industrial facility. Tufting creating 3D surfaces on 3D objects through robot fabrication

Packaging and Unpacking

“Body Myths” Encounter Urban Bathing Body Myths is a system of conceptual and physical leaking of water, light, and bodies.

It investigates space of intimacy around bathing that reveals a diversity of cultures by exposing the bodily in space. Through the presence of the body, differences of gender and identity become more visible. To go beyond gendered categorization in space, the architecture starts to envelope and fragment with acoustic, and reflective surfaces the perception. It is an attempt to reconsider spatial hierarchies and open for a multiplicity of intimacies. It reclaims the Donaukanal as a public space to swim and opens an artificial riverbed offering the body different types to provide for degrees of intimacy. Space is experienced in ...

Sour Possibilities FERMENTATION AS A PRACTICE OF CULTIVATING SOCIAL CHANGE IN TIMES OF CRISIS

Since trust in uncertainty appears to be the only certainty in 2020 and the near future, it may also be a representation of the direction in which humanity is heading, considering the already ongoing climate catastrophe as our current destination. While fermentation often appears as a self-help method, it also represents a means of assurement – materially in the form of food storage, and metaphorically as it prolongs one’s cultural heritage or even feeling of self-sufficiency. This project considers fermentation as an object of research and as a way of addressing collective futures. It is an introduction to an ongoing ...

In her work she presents animals, that might provoke fear in many people, in a non-scary way, she paints both possible opposing sides of such animals letting them not be generalised into a group but be seen from two sides at the same time. The main idea for the project is to point out the deception we all face in our lives. The artist is trying to show with her works how people are being deceived in their daily life by the outside factors such as media, and how we deceive ourselves, by relying on our first impressions and ...

RE-ANIMATE Eröffnung

The pandemic impacts our personal and societal life. We live accompanied by worries about our personal health and that of family and friends. We are affected by insecurities regarding our professional and financial future. We follow statistics on the death toll, intensive care units and vaccine doses. For many of us this time is putting a strain on our mental health.

Our city has become quieter. Public life is curtailed. Culture is largely put on halt. The immediacy of our experiences and live encounters are largely missing.

Sexuality and Self-identification

The project “Sexuality and Self-identification” shows a small video story, which is presented in the form of a self-analysis of one person changing between two chairs. On the left chair the character talks about her problems in her sexual life, and when she sits on the right chair she becomes “rational” and asks a question to herself to try to figure out what was the problem with her sexual experiences. It starts along simple stories about her sexual experiences told in a style as she would tell them to a friend. Through the dialogue with herself she starts to ...

All Watched Over aims to create a camouflaged interior as an artifact of data and images. Through the exchanged visual elements in cybernetic terrain, social relations are created while physical bodies expand onto virtual.Mediated civic interior values human expression and public experience while adapting mass media typologies to the digital age. The facade becomes a visual tool to avoid panoptic gaze and grants anonymity to the body. The interior order behind the facade rejects the ideal privileged cartesian subject through the multiplication of focuses and expanding the visual field. Set in Concrete Women's Imprisonment in the U.S. in the Context of International Norms and Standards

This thesis concerns the treatment of women prisoners in the United States of America inspired by the personal account of Piper Kerman through her memoir Orange is the New Black. It analyses the facts relating to imprisonment in the U.S. penal system and compares the conditions with international standards and norms governing the treatment of women prisoners. The issue is also portrayed from an artistic perspective by casting objects, significant to women’s experiences in prison, into concrete. Taking a lead from Piper Kerman’s day-to-day experience, the project looks into specific areas that have been debated by ...

Upward, behind the onstreaming it mooned

Mutual aid in self-organized societies

“Mutual aid in self-organized societies ” considers questions of the social behaviors of collectives and individuals by relating them to the concept of mutual aid in examples of self-organized, non-hierarchical societies with autonomous methodologies as strategies of survival, solidarity, and self-sustainability. Referring to the philosophical directions of the anarchistic school of thought, Marković emphasizes the meaning of mutual aid as social models and their possibilities in the time of the “new reality.” Research work conducted within socially engaged art practice, accumulated in a theoretical written publication and presented as a musical performance relaying on the discussed topics of anarchism and ...

The ambition of RCDR is to blend the civic functions of the BLVD. with those of agricultural tourism into a new architectural typology.

This new typology of the boulevard, a hybrid of architecture, transit infrastructure and landscape design, emphasizes these discipline’s common quality of circulation to derive networks of urban amenity and cultural attraction.

In doing so, this new typology aims to enrich both the quality of living and potential for architectural complexity in the suburbs.

Sensus Communis uses virtual environment, sound, touch, and smell to create embodiment inside of the thematic narrative Anti-Atlantis. If Atlantis is a story of an ancient culture destroyed by nature, then Anti-Atlantis represents its opposite – present or future landscape destroyed by human culture of excess. The organic form represents the vision of utopian paradise as we remember it – even though this memory might exist only as a constructed fantasy. The scene reveals the effect of “progress”; appropriation of nature as resources for industrial production with alarming pollution levels. down the rabbit hole

The collective “Jünglinge” develops new queer, feminist and post-migrant narrative formats, among others in their film “Futur Drei” (July 3rd at Kaleidoskop), but also in their work on the web series “Druck”. Raquel Dukpa and Paulina Lorenz will talk about their experiences. They will discuss collective work and possibilities of “allyship”, autofictional storytelling/working with biographical experiences and possibilities of anti-discriminatory set/film work.

Zeitscheiben

DOUX Gedichte

Rokoko. Wolken aus Stuck. Oder aus Zucker. Komponiert, als wögen sie nichts. Wie Koloraturen. Oder Perücken. Das Leichte und das Schwere: Fächerschlag, Menuett im Schatten des Objekts. Wo bist du jetzt?

The interstices of that melancholy

From Bodies To Worlds Design Investigations - Through Fiction to Alternative Realities

If the global pandemic has taught us anything, it is that everything – from microscopic bodies to planetary systems, is interconnected and in continual transformation. And behind every transformation lies the hidden story of how such shifts came into being; visible in their anthropological, material, cultural and technological qualities. Of how they were conceived, distributed, used and even disposed of. This is as true for our fragile ecosystems, as it is for our deliberate, human interventions. In this year’s Design Investigations show, we unearth, explore, imagine and craft such stories and share them with you. From meditative simulations that ...

Aquaponic Ecosystem The Conservation - Consumption Nexus

Gather, To Go, Phase 3

The climate crisis is a major challenge of our generation. Our lifestyle, consumption, food and production play a significant role and without fundamental changes, limiting global warming is hardly achievable anymore. Designers can contribute to achieving the climate target by taking these factors into consideration at an early design stage.

Our Department Industrial Design 1 has picked up on innovative initiatives and we show projects from the subject areas “Gather” (sharing/together), “To Go” (waste avoidance) and “Phase 3” (production methods/circular economy), that the students have been working on in the past three semesters.
