This thesis concerns the treatment of women prisoners in the United States of America inspired by the personal account of Piper Kerman through her memoir Orange is the New Black. It analyses the facts relating to imprisonment in the U.S. penal system and compares the conditions with international standards and norms governing the treatment of women prisoners. The issue is also portrayed from an artistic perspective by casting objects, significant to women’s experiences in prison, into concrete. Taking a lead from Piper Kerman’s day-to-day experience, the project looks into specific areas that have been debated by many UN human rights fora, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and academics in recent years including admission, health care, trauma and mental health, ill-treatment, and rehabilitation and release.
